5 Years of The Good Heart

“We neglect kindness at our peril. It is the glue that binds communities together” - Professor Robin Banerjee, Frome Annual Kindness Lecture, March 2023 The Good Heart is five years old this month! As life gets steadily harder for many in our community, in all kinds of ways, we're more committed than ever to jointly celebrating, practising and exploring the vital quality of kindness. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support, and warmly invite you to celebrate with us at our party on Tuesday 25th July, 4-6pm. See below for a few highlights from the last few years. Also (we're one of four finalists!): What perfect timing to be recognised by the BBC Radio Somerset ‘Make a Difference’ Awards in the Community Group Category! Thank you for putting us forward.

We have been very busy with community events, and are delighted to be welcoming more groups and individuals through our doors, including a new Mental Health drop-in for young people, led by Focus Frome. Scroll down to find out more, see details of our upcoming events (including 3 evenings with Venerable Robina Courtin), our regular groups and other exciting news!

With thanks for your continued support, The Good Heart Team

We hope you can join us! Free, please book in advance.

Venerable Robina Courtin

We are delighted to be welcoming Australian nun, the Venerable Robina Courtin, to Frome for three very special evenings in August. Ven Robina applies the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism to daily life in a way that is challenging, serious, funny, inspiring and, above all, practical and down to earth. In addition to her international teachings and regular podcasts, she has edited a range of books and magazines, set up the Liberation Prison Project to work with prisoners on death row, leads pilgrimages to holy places in Asia, and has been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key of Freedom. You can find out more at www.robinacourtin.com Everyone is welcome, for one evening or all three (although we recommend starting on the Monday evening, if that’s possible for you).

In anticipation of Ven Robina’s visit to Frome, we will be screening ‘Chasing Buddha’ at The Good Heart. This documentary film about her life and journey from Australian political activist and feminist to a Buddhist nun will be shown at 7.30pm on Monday 24th July. Please book in advance, tickets by donation.

Regular Events at The Good Heart

For more information about any of our regular events, see our website! All are drop-in, so no need to book.

We are honoured to have been nominated for the BBC Radio Somerset ‘Make a Difference’ Awards! This is in recognition of the work we have done in running community groups such as Tiny Hearts, Dying Matters, Heartspace and Arty Hearts, as well as for the annual Frome Kindness Festival and the thousands of free meals given out over the years via our Pay it Forward scheme in the cafe. We are looking forward to the awards ceremony at Haynes Motor Museum on Friday 22nd September. Wish us luck!

As you may have gathered, Namdi has been out and about, serving his delicious food to festival-goers at various locations! At the times he is away, we are doing our best to cover as many dates as possible to ensure The Good Heart can keep its doors open to welcome everyone for food and drinks. To keep things simple and to save mixed messages, please check the Tibetan Memories Facebook page to see whether they are serving food at The Good Heart. We will let you know when we have guest chefs in to cover. Thank you for your patience!

Mahalia’s Kitchen @The Good Heart

Whilst Namdi has been away, you may have been fortunate enough to sample some of Mahalia’s Guyanese and Caribbean infused dishes at The Good Heart. Mahalia’s Kitchen will be back from Monday 10th to Friday 14th July! You can follow Mahalia and see her Good Heart menu here.
